The death of Sahil Wakode, a second-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, raises an uncomfortable question about India’s elite educational institutions: what happens to students from historically excluded communities after they have crossed the gates?
Wakode died by suicide on September 18, after he was allegedly found using a mobile phone during an examination. His parents have alleged that he faced caste-based harassment and discrimination at the institute. Police have registered a case, and the Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating.
