Be it life or photography, three fundamental principles are essential - authenticity, simplicity and patience.

Last summer, my uncle gave me his analogue camera, a Canon 2000N. It was his prized possession, a precious little gadget he brought when he used to work as a designer and photographer. But for the past thirteen years, it was sat in his cupboard, gathering dust. When he gave it to me, it already had a loaded film with a few pictures taken on it.

Like most people in my generation, I started learning photography on digital cameras. For years, I have been taking photos with my Canon 5D and Panasonic Lumix GH4. But I had no experience of working with film cameras and did not know much about how to work with them. I knew it was a long road ahead with a steep learning curve, but could not wait to learn.

Reading through copious amounts of material on the web and watching endless hours of YouTube videos only helped me learn the theoretical side of things. But photography is an experiential art – you can get better at it only through hands-on learning. So I decided the best way to get a grip on the film camera was to leave my digital camera at home and hit the streets, armed only with my film camera and a couple of film rolls.
