Narendra Modi’s visit to France signals a ‘deepening’ diplomatic relationship between Paris & New Delhi.

The Government of India confirmed it will buy twenty-six Rafale Marine fighter jets from France’s Dassault Group. This announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France. In Paris, Modi met French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, had dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and attended the annual parade for France’s Bastille Day as the ‘Guest of Honour.’

France has been intensifying its political, commercial and strategic ties with India, attempting to nudge India away from its top weapons supplier, Russia. The goal is to deepen naval and security cooperation between Paris and New Delhi in the Indo-Pacific, where France has a string of islands and a vast maritime exclusive economic zone. The relationship is also driven by shared concerns about China’s rising influence in the region.
