On August 23, 2023, India became the first country to land a spacecraft on the moon’s South Pole successfully. Chandrayaan 3, Indian Space Research Organisation‘s (ISRO) mission to the moon, launched in July from Andhra Pradesh, touched down in a region of the lunar surface thought to contain water ice. The historic touchdown occurred at 6:03 p.m. India Standard Time (8:33 a.m. ET or 12: 33 p.m. GMT).
