As the elections dawn on India, its rumbunctious democracy works its charm.

The message from the state legislative assembly elections in three states – Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh – is clear: the popular sentiment is shifting away from the BJP in the ‘Hindi heartland.’

The election results send a clear message: the BJP’s divide and attack policy is not working. In seventy-four campaign rallies, the BJP’s so-called ‘star campaigner’ Yogi Aditynath spewed hate speech and used Lord Rama’s name for political gain, hoping to capture a ‘Hindu vote base.’ His communal dog-whistling did not work.

He boasted that the BJP is the only party capable of establishing ‘Rama Rajya.’ Underestimating the intelligence of the electorate, he used religious mythology in his political campaigns and made misleading and outlandish claims. Chattisgarh, according to him, was the paternal home of Ram’s mother, Telangana was the Dandakaranya jungle that Ram crossed during his exile, the sage Parashuram meditated in Madhya Pradesh, and Ram’s commander, Bajrang Bali, would defeat Ali. Yogi Adityanath spoke as if he discovered the geographic coordinates of mythological places just before his election rallies.
