It’s All In The Mind

Your mind is to your body what your body is to your mind. It holds the key to your health.

The philosopher Aristotle articulated, that, “Just as you ought not to attempt to use eyes without head or head without body, so you should not treat body without soul.” The ancient Greek physician Galen too proposed, in another context, that gloomy women were, for the most part, prone to cancer of the reproductive organs — the likely cause being prolonged depression. The Roman poet Virgil suggested that ‘mind moves matter’ — a credo that ancient Oriental philosophers and physicians stressed upon and used it with good effect.

Our body is as gifted as our mind; the two, in concert, are our internal therapeutic system’s most potent buddies. Our mind works seamlessly through the brain and nervous system; in so doing, it sends authoritative notes, or messages, to our body. This is essential to prompt the working of our health-giving mechanisms. It is principally through such communication systems, or response ‘loops,’ that refined systems work to send clear-cut, instant information from our body back to our brain. The best part is the mind is always in ‘personal’ contact with our body’s ever-changing internal milieu. Besides, it functions in tandem with our therapeutic system. Put simply, it corresponds to a classical allegory — where there are nerves, the mind can traverse at the speed of thought.

Decisive Influence

Every mental activity, conscious or unconscious, has a decisive influence on our therapeutic system. It can amplify, or hamper, its ‘act.’ When our mind is in a positive state, emoting love and affection, caring and empathy, including health, cheerfulness and accord, there is peak secretion of ‘good’ chemicals, such as endorphins, in our brain. They essentially ‘flush’ our body with positive, pulsating energy. It is this gush that provides the ‘therapeutic push’ to our body to achieve improved health and optimal wellness.
