The Houthi attack on Riyadh’s international airport marks a change in the way the group presents its role in the Middle East. The strike was the deadliest attack on Saudi soil since the war involving Iran began in February. The timing added to the pressure; Saudi Arabia was hosting a conference for oil producers as the attacks continued.
For years, the Houthis have been described as an Iranian proxy, a force that serves Tehran’s interests in its contest with Saudi Arabia and other American allies. There is some truth to this view. The two sides share regional interests and have built ties over time. However, the latest attacks suggest the Houthis are pursuing their own agenda. Their leaders are seeking to present this fight as a defence of Yemen rather than a campaign directed by Iran.
