When the Hindu priest Mahant Bajrang Muni openly declared his intention to rape Muslim women, it was clear that he did not fear the consequences. After all, this wasn’t the first time he was making such disturbing claims. But this time, his words went viral on Twitter and the hashtag #ArrestBajrangMuni began to trend. As a result, he had to put out a video saying he respects all women.
However, in another video, he targeted the journalist who uploaded Muni’s video (in which he threatened to rape Muslim women) and accused him of sharing posts that show Hindus in a bad light. In reality, Bajrang Muni’s claims (that he respects “all women” and that the journalist shows Hindus in a bad light) is nothing but an obfuscation of the truth. It is a disingenuous statement that would help him evade arrest.
Bajrang Muni clearly incited hate. He threratened to rape Muslim women, claimed that he will take Muslim women out of their homes and rape them. The speech was given inside a small truck. In another angle of the video, police personnel are seen standing right behind the Mahant, completely unbothered by the threats he made which itself warrants arrest under Section 354 (A).
What follows is even worse. As Bajrang Muni threatened to rape Muslim women, the crowd cheered him enthusiastically with the chant ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ After the video went viral – and calls to arrest him were made on Twitter – the UP police filed an FIR against him and are “investigating” the incident. How long the investigation will go on is anyone’s guess.
