The appropriate question we need to ask at this moment is: Howdy India?

Two strong men – Donald Trump and Narendra Modi – enjoyed a Wagnerian extravaganza at the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston, Texas. It was organised with Teutonic thoroughness, almost on par with the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

At Houston, the two men expressed mutual admiration for each other. But at the same time, they are looking for a good deal – at the others’ expense.

Their mutual admiration is understandable. In many respects, the two men are kindred spirits. Both men believe they are elected monarchs and are prepared to do anything to stay in power. They share a deep contempt for the rule of law – domestically and internationally. Neither of them believes in the separation of powers, advocated by the eighteenth-century French philosopher, Montesquieu.

Modi must have admired the sheer brazenness with which Trump walked out of the Iran deal. On his part, Trump must have marvelled at Modi’s barefaced attack on Article 370.
