The U.N. Security Council’s third meeting on Sunday, May 16, 2021, proved sterile, as Prime Minister Netanyahu correctly assessed, and he continues to retain his stranglehold on the Biden Administration’s policy.
Those of us who expected Biden to show moral courage are deeply disappointed. In his first public statement, he focused on Israel’s ‘right to defend itself,’ implying the Palestinians had no such right. In short, by denying the human rights of the Palestinians, Biden implied they are sub-human.
Before the Security Council meeting, Biden called Netanyahu, presumably for his concurrence to a Council resolution calling for a tentative cease-fire. Obviously, Netanyahu did not concur.
On the other hand, China, which is holding the presidency of the Council for the month, made it clear that 14 of the 15 members were wanting to issue a call for a cease-fire. However, Washington stood in the way.
