Bharatanatyam & The Devadasi System

The Devadasi tradition, a subject of discourse for many, symbolises the appropriation of Dalit culture by the elites.

The Bharatnatyam we know today is practised by the middle and upper classes, most of whom belong to the upper castes. However, the dance form did not originate from the upper castes. It came from the lower castes, like the Isaivellalar caste.
