Her hair, oiled and neatly parted in the middle and with jewellery adorning her youthful face, Umrao Jan stares into the distance with a fan in her lap. The fan’s circular façade has two mermaids lifting a crown, the seal of the house of Awadh.
The memory of this photo session would later be immortalized half a world away in the New York Public Library as a part of Abbas Ali’s ‘Beauties of Lucknow’.
