The Modi Government Is Diluting India’s Environmental Laws

The quest to score a better rank in the ‘ease of doing business’ index is permanently degrading the environment.

Even as the nation grapples with COVID-19 and geopolitical threats in the Galwan Valley and Kalapaani territories, the Modi government is tampering with regulations that are meant to protect the environment. Particularly, the government is diluting two important provisions that are meant to protect the environment.

One: the Environmental Impact Assessment, a tool that is used to evaluate the impact of developmental projects on the environment. A Draft Notification EIA 2020 to this extent is available in the public domain.

Two: the Mines & Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act 1957 and The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015.

The Draft EIA 2020: Excluding Public Opinion

The Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) plays an important role in sustainable development or development that meets the needs of the present without hampering the abilities of future generations to meet their own needs. Issued as guidelines, the EIA came into force on September 14, 2006. The new draft, if affected, will supersede the 2006 guidelines.
