The Road

If there’s a verse that’s poignant & powerful – this is it. It punches you in the gut, compels you to reflect on humanity.

One step at a time
Is all you need to take.
With each step you leave
A fragment of your past
Behind, in the big city.

Think of each step as the first
Towards burying a dream:
No school fees to be paid
No begging the landlord
No queuing for rations.

Be light on your feet, measured
In your step; walk right behind me
When the sun is in my face
And show me the way
When the sun is on my back.

Hold back the tears.
The heartless wait
To violate the pure
Everywhere, all the time
In toxic devotion.
