Marvel Entertainment is probably the world’s most successful producer of superhero films and comic books. They have a roster of iconic characters: Spiderman, Ironman, X-Men, Blade, Daredevil, Hulk, Deadpool, Blade, Elektra, Thor, Captain America and The Punisher. The combined worldwide box office gross of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is $22 billion. Every household has some Marvel action figures, thanks to kids who are obsessed with them.
The Marvel empire evolved from the comic book empire that they built in the 20th century. In the new millennium, Marvel was able to successfully transform itself from a comic book publisher to the premier maker of superhero films, the dominant genre at the box office today. Since Marvel movies reach every corner of the planet and are watched by billions, how can they possibly grow their influence?
One word: religion.
This thought may seem absurd to short term thinkers. If you, like me, are a long term strategist, you will instantly grasp this notion. Marvel already has the mythology, and the mass following, required to scale it up as a global religious operation. It just needs to add some necessary elements to give the MCU a religious gravitas.
According to Wikipedia, there is no “scholarly consensus over what precisely constitutes a religion.” However, every self-respecting religion needs a story of the universe, sacred things, festivals, supernatural beings, a moral code and a soteriology. In my opinion, without at least these features, one cannot have a proper religion.
