The photographs of five baby orangutans recently rescued in Odisha are adorable. Their story is anything but. Behind their faces lies a reminder of the cruelty inflicted on these gentle primates, which are hunted, captured and illegally traded across Southeast Asia.
The scale of the illegal wildlife trade is enormous, although precise estimates are difficult to establish. What is beyond doubt is that for many species, including orangutans, the trade is compounded by the relentless destruction of their natural habitat.
