Once upon a time, aeons ago, when the lawmaker Manu was performing his religious rituals on the banks of the river Cherivi, a tiny fish came up to him and asked him for a favour. The tiny fish, afraid that a bigger fish would eat it, asked Manu to protect it. In return, the fish said it would save Manu from an impending flood that would submerge the earth.
It also gave Manu a formula. First, it instructed him to keep it in a pot so that bigger fish do not eat it. When it outgrows the pot, Manu must put it in a tank. When it outgrows the tank, Manu must put it in the Ganges and, after that, in the ocean. The fish also instructed Manu to build a gigantic ship.
