A Nice Man

A poet laments, through her verse, about the travails of finding a nice man.

Over butter naan and dal makhni
Ma remarks, why don’t you marry
A nice man, sweetie
I inhale
A nice man dropped his suave charm when I
Asked the server to split the bill.
Clenched jaw, trembling fists
A nice man sighed, if only you weren’t so smart
I would’ve married you instantly.
Sympathetic shrug, condescending smile

A nice man only yesterday
Followed me home from work,
Excuse me ma’am but I’ve seen you before
Why don’t we have some fun, sexy?
Think you’re too good for me, huh?
