Weary after tailing Claire, my boss,
‘9 to 5’ notion made me laugh
I saw my Marie,
Engrossed in her beloved Paw Patrol,
inside a castle made of bowls of Oreos
The woman who sat beside me
Fifty-ish, plump, condescending
Chewed off my ears.
She was from the Arabs, came here at the age of twelve.
Maybe meeting her caused my insides to churn after hearing the news.
The girl was pulped
By whom, the answer not visible
All were present; the government, the police and the Rabbis
She took me back, thousands of kilometres away
When I too was 22.
My lousy neighbour auntie scoffed at the length of my skirt.
A disgrace, she said
Perhaps a temptress, born to lure out her dull husband
We boast about Durgas, at night we desecrate her.
