The dramatic increase in hysterectomies in India has nothing to do with sexuality or health. It has more to do with profits, greed & control.

Hysterectomy–or removal of the uterus–has turned into a multi-million dollar scam in India. The number of hysterectomies has rapidly increased. But the dramatic increase in hysterectomies in India has nothing to do with sexuality or health. It has more to do with profits, greed and control. As the BBC report puts it:

Thousands of Indian women are having their wombs removed in operations that campaigners say are unnecessary and only performed to make money for unscrupulous private doctors.

Undergoing hysterectomy is a complicated procedure that might cause severe problems. To prevent this, it is recommended that only those above the age of 45, which is when most women get menopause, undergo the surgery. Yet, in India, about 6% of women between ages 30 and 45 undertake the procedure.

Women in rural India, mostly from poor socio-economic backgrounds, are being trapped into having hysterectomies. Their gynaecological problems are completely unrelated to the removal of uterus. When rural Indian women suffer from back pain, white discharge, and such things, they go to the doctor and explain these problems. Unscrupulous doctors, many who run private hospitals in India, insist on removing the uterus. By doing so, they subject them to serious lifelong health complications.
