Cuba is broken. Here’s why.

On 16 March 2026, Cuba’s electricity grid collapsed. The country was already struggling to move people, pump water and keep hospitals functioning. As Washington’s chokehold on foreign oil suppliers intensified the fuel crisis, the power failure further strained Cuba’s already fragile grid. 

Towering above the capital is Torre K, a luxury hotel linked to Cuba’s military business empire. Was the government committing economic suicide by expanding hotels while the infrastructure sustaining the economy deteriorated? Island-wide hotel occupancy was just 18.9% in 2025: Cuba had rooms for visitors who weren’t coming but couldn’t keep the lights on for those who called it home.
