Contemplating the rather noisy, often cacophonous, political debate in India, especially when the election mode sets in, one observes with sadness the application of the law of inverse proportion: the less urgent and less important a matter is, the more noise is made about it, and it reduces the media space-time for more important issues.

This law applies in toto to the ongoing debate on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) triggered by Prime Minister Modi in the context of the forthcoming election in the state of Madhya Pradesh, where the incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is seeking another term; Chauhan had held that office since 2005, with a break of about 15 months when he lost the election in 2018. By ‘attracting’ defectors from the Congress party, he came back to office in 2020.
