The Trump-Modi tamasha is an election gimmick, a diplomatic event aimed at building political legitimacy at home.

President Donald Trump might or might not have found time to read Julius Caesar’s message to Rome sent 2047 years ago from northern Turkey: Veni, Vidi, Vici ( I came, I saw, I conquered.) Trump did conquer, not India exactly, but the Prime Minister’s allegiance, certainly.

But uncharitable critics might say that, unlike the tribes that resisted Caesar, there was no resistance, but complete acceptance from Prime Minister Modi who praised Trump most generously and as often as possible, reciprocated by Trump in full measure. Rarely have we seen two political leaders exchange so much praise.

There were two events in Ahmedabad. One: the Namaste Trump at the Motera stadium, the construction of which is about to be completed. Two: the visit to the Sabarmati Ashram. Prior to the visit, it had been announced that Trump was to inaugurate the stadium. The Ashram visit was agreed to by the U.S. side only after some delay. One wonders whether Trump was keen on it. In any case, by omitting to mention Mahatma Gandhi in the visitor’s book Trump showed his lack of interest in the man about whom Einstein said:
