Modi is an excellent orator. He keeps his audience spellbound. But his speeches are based on lies & half-truths.

Narendra Modi is an excellent orator. When he delivers a speech, in political rallies or public gatherings, he keeps his audience spellbound. Some, especially his fans (bhakts, as they are called in colloquial parlance), believe he is “India’s best orator.”

It’s acknowledged the world over that oratorial skills make a leader. Some of the world’s most famous leaders have risen to the top primarily because they are great orators. Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill – two of the world’s most famous political personalities who represent diametrically different world views – are good examples.

“Every great movement on this earth owes its growth to great orators,” wrote Adolf Hitler, in Mein Kampf, his autobiography published in 1925. The word “great” can not be attributed to a mass-murderer like Hitler. However, he learned the art of public speaking, used perverse ideas of racial superiority, demonised the Jews and captured power. In more than five thousand speeches, Hitler cast a spell on his audiences and promised them that the Nazi empire would reign for over a thousand years.

Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister who won the Nobel Prize for literature, partly for his mastery of speech making, rallied the British people under relentless Nazi onslaught through his speeches. Churchill’s speeches – We shall fight on the beaches (delivered to the house of commons), Blood, toil, tears, and sweat (delivered on 13 May), This was their finest hour (delivered on 18 June) – are written in the annals of British history for they moved the British people.
