Political scoundrels–elected to the highest office through democratic means–are holding democracy to ransom.

The world’s largest democracy is in disarray. In the name of coalition politics, political parties across the spectrum are blatantly distorting, manipulating and twisting the concept of adult franchise.

To grab political power, they are resorting to “horse-trading,” a euphemism for political bribery, unlawful inducements and political extortion. Political scoundrels–elected to the highest office through democratic means–are holding democracy to ransom. 

They are serving their own political ends by wilfully distorting the democratic mandate bestowed by the people of India. They are undermining the idea of “adult suffrage” enshrined in the constitution, and making a mockery of the Indian electoral system. And sadly, it seems as though democracy has lost all meaning in the world’s largest democracy.

The elected representatives–lawmakers entrusted with upholding the basic tenets and values of the Constitution–are systematically strangulating institutions that are essential to the functioning of a democracy. Slowly and steadily, with great vigour and commitment, they are uprooting the democratic foundations of the country.
