There is nothing wrong in starting on a moral note; Biden will be demonstrating that America is a benign hegemon.

When Biden moves into the White House on January 20, 2021, he will start correcting Trump’s errors. One of the worst errors to be corrected forthwith is the policy towards Iran; his ‘maximum pressure’ has misfired in two ways.

First: Iran rejected Trump’s demand to sit down with his Administration and work out a JCPOA plus agreement that will limit Iran’s ballistic missiles capability and compel Iran to stop what Washington choses to call ‘its destabilising’ activities in the region.

The implicit assumption is that while the United States is permitted to intervene militarily and otherwise, wherever it chooses, Iran, belonging to the lesser breed of states, should obey instructions from US.

Second: Trump and Netanyahu did their utmost to provoke Iran to retaliate in a manner that will justify a serious military strike against Iran. The Pentagon carried out a drone strike and assassinated General Soleimani, head of IGRD, one of the top aides to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, in January 2020. Iran gave a calibrated response by hitting an American base without killing anyone. Netanyahu has carried out another assassination on an eminent physicist Fakhrizadeh on November 30, 2020. Once again, Iran refused to be provoked into responding violently.
