Forests: The Currency Of The Future

Biodiversity is priceless. But it is essential to view forests as currencies that multiply in value.

Forests are the currency of the future. They are more valuable than extractive metals and stones such as gold and diamonds, superior to pliable currencies–such as the­ dollar, pound, rupee, euro, yen–and, more reliable, functional, and useful than any of the digitally manipulated cryptocurrencies.

Forests are biodiversity hotspots–resilient, dynamic environmental systems–that act as carbon sinks. They sustain life on earth. They also have an extraordinary capacity to regenerate and protect us from the impending catastrophe hanging over our heads – climate change.

However, over the centuries, this natural currency has been dwindling, threatening our very existence. The reality of climate change has brought us face to face with our folly.

But how did we get here?

Of all the forest types, ‘virgin forests’–also known as ‘old-growth forests’ or ‘primary forests’–are most crucial. With mature canopy trees and intricate understories, they are the globe’s greatest repositories of abundant life forms.
