With the Brexit mandate, the UK has closed its doors on global trade and commerce, a sharp point of departure from the expansionary policies that created the British empire.

Brexit was an act of self-sabotage. It is inconceivable that Great Britain, considered the birthplace of modern capitalism and the Industrial Revolution, would pass the Brexit referendum in 2016. 

On January 31, 2020, after protracted negotiations with the lawmakers in Brussels to earn a soft exit, the UK formally exited the European single market and customs union.
