Brazil’s latest election exposed an unsettling reality. A growing number of Brazilians appear to be losing faith in their political system. A clear warning came from those who did not vote.
In the Oct. 4, 2026 general election, approximately 33.4 million Brazilians, representing around 21 per cent of the electorate, stayed away from the ballot box. In a country where voting is compulsory for literate citizens between 18 and 70, it was the highest abstention rate since 1998.
