A Coup In Niger

The coup is a terrible blow to Niger's efforts at building stable democratic institutions & fostering peace and stability.

On July 26, 2023, the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was overthrown in a bloodless coup. The Presidential Guard—an elite armed forces unit tasked with protecting the President, headed by General Omar Tchiani—orchestrated the coup. 

General Abdourahmane Tchiani—also known as Omar Tchiani—declared himself leader; the West African nation is now under military rule, and the country’s elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, has been held by the military.
