Contemplating the year gone past, and looking for a way to describe it, I cannot help recalling the words of Queen Elizabeth II, who left us in September 2022. Speaking at Guildhall on 24 November 1922, the Queen said:
1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an ‘Annus Horribilis’. I suspect that I am not alone in thinking it so.
I am saying this not only because of the horrendous war in and on Ukraine, waged without any serious thought of a Christmas pause.
Ukraine dominated the so-called ‘international media’, only because the war is in Europe. The media correctly drew attention to the humanitarian disaster that unfolded in Ukraine as Russia destroyed the power grid, and much else, by resorting to bombing in violation of Geneva Conventions on War. However, the same media have chosen to be silent or less critical about wars outside Europe.
When Saudi Arabia bombed weddings and even funerals in neighboring Yemen known to antiquity as Arabia Felix, with arms supplied by the merchants of death in United States, United Kingdom, and the rest of the West, with millions in Yemen reduced to famine and hundreds of thousands dying, the same ‘international community’ chose to look elsewhere.
