The fax machine buzzed at the office of Wizcraft Entertainment in Mumbai: it was a message from Michael Jackson, the ‘King of Pop,’ who wanted to perform in India. The staff thought it was a prank and refused to believe it until they heard it from Michael Jackson himself.
To be sure that it was indeed the ‘King of Pop,’ the excited Wizcraft staff went to meet Michael Jackson at his Los Angeles studios. They also wanted to be sure that Michael Jackson would not back out from performing in Mumbai.
This, of course, is one version of the story.
But according to the other, more popular version of the story, Raj Thackeray, now chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and then a rising star in the Shiv Sena hierarchy, had invited Michael Jackson to perform in the newly rechristened Mumbai. The event was, ostensibly, presented as an opportunity to raise funds for employment generation on a massive scale.
