Saeeda Bano: India’s First Female Newscaster

Saeeda Bano’s story is exceptional, especially for a single Muslim woman during one of the most difficult times for India.

On August 13, 1947, days before India became an independent country, All India Radio (AIR) echoed with a delightful female voice. At 8 AM, Saeeda Bano introduced herself to the audience and read the news bulletin in Urdu, becoming the first female newsreader in India. Bano was 34 years old when she freed herself from the shackles of patriarchy and launched herself into a career previously reserved for men.
