On the morning of November 17, 1902, a cartoon appeared in the pages of the Washington Post. It depicted the moustachioed Theodore Roosevelt, in full hunting gear with a rifle in his hand and his back turned to a scared black bear. His other hand reaching back, gesturing to the bear’s captor that he refuses to shoot a wounded, tied and frightened animal. The cartoon was titled ‘Drawing the line in Mississippi’.
