Check this: one rare Pokémon trading card could fetch you a whopping $3.6 million.

In the era of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) where people are paying money to virtually own art and images, owning something physically might seem an outdated idea. Except if the thing in question is a coin or a collectable card–like a Pokémon card.

Collectables, which have for long been an alternative form of investment, are based on the idea of nostalgia–and on the joy of owning something that almost no one owns. It is popularly believed that a thing becomes a collectable 20 years after it becomes unpopular. This does not mean that you can sell your old closet for a fortune. However, if you want to be a shrewd investor, you must be able to predict what might become a collectable in the future.

But how does one speculate and calculate the return on investment on alternate assets that are generally not considered as “investments”? One way to find out is to see what sells the most, in terms of collectables, at a given period. For instance, on eBay, collectable cards sell the most. Among these,Pokémon cards are the most sought after.

The anime industry still has some of the old ways of consuming entertainment content. Most anime is 2D and still earn money through DVD/Blu-ray sales and merchandising. Their merchandise includes cards that are collected when released and then sold years later at a high price. Some of these cards are literal gold; one Pikachu card made of gold was sold at an auction for more than $2000.
