Zanskari horses are not prone to diseases. Yet there has been neglect that manifested in the scarcity of these horses.

Imagine riding the Himalayan winds on the back of a beautiful grey horse with long hair. You know nothing but the horse, its hair flying majestically through the wind, the mountains, the cold weather, and yourself.

One could make this imagination a reality by riding the Zanskari horses of the Himalayas. But unfortunately, the Zanskari horse is on the brink of extinction.

Zanskari horses are native of Zanskar Valley, Ladakh. The predominant colour is grey. But one can also find (those lucky enough to find) them in brown, bay, black or chestnut.

They are ‘known for their ruggedness, ability to withstand extreme cold climates, work tirelessly, run in abandon and carry loads at high altitudes. These horses are medium in size, well-built and of 120-140cm height. The Zanskari horses have a uniform gait. A heavy and long tail is characteristic of this breed. The body hairs are long and glossy.’

Once upon a time, it was loved and domesticated because of its qualities as a horse. In the eighteenth century, the Zanskari horse is believed to have brought many victories in the local wars of Ladakh.
