Rajapalayam: Fierce, Loyal & Brave

The Rajapalayam hound is one of the few native purebred dogs of India. However, their numbers are dwindling.

Humans started taming dogs around 7,000 BC. Over the years, dogs have attested their friendship and loyalty to humans. And today, dogs, considered ‘man’s best friends’, are the most popular pets in the world.

Some researchers argue that the people of East Asia were the first to tame dogs. Indeed, friendship between a man and his dog finds a mention even in epics like the Mahabharata; 2,000 years ago, India’s royals used hounds to guard their territory.

Today, humans are breeding and trading dogs to create “designer dogs” with specific traits. In the rush to create the perfect dog, breeders are creating dogs with many genetic abnormalities. Yet, fortunately, through the centuries, one breed stands apart from those genetically altered designer dogs – the Rajapalayam. 

The Rajapalayam is a native breed. It is a medium sized hound, around 51-70 cms tall, that is acclimatised to India’s climatic conditions. With a smooth milky-white coat, slender body with a pink button nose, and the elegance of a racehorse, it looks gorgeous.
