Food scarcity. Fuel Shortages. Flash floods. Energy blackouts. These are realities we are witnessing today. We live through some of the most tumultuous times in the history of humanity. Indeed, country after country is seeing its people face hunger and poverty. Inflation is spiralling out of control. People cannot afford basics–food, clean water, medicine and other essentials–to ensure a decent standard of life.
Climate change, unresponsive governments, and irresponsible leaders accelerate the climate crisis. With the complete collapse of the government, ordinary Sri Lankans are in a precarious situation–much like those in Zimbabwe and Somalia. This must be a warning for other nations in South Asia and the rest of the world.
Millions of lower- and middle-income families have been pushed into poverty with increasing inflation, breakdown in global supply chains, and dependence on large corporations. Many of them are facing hunger and starvation.
The world is divided into two halves: the global rich and the global poor. Low-income families in developing countries–such as Albania, Argentina, Panama, Kenya, Ghana, and Sri Lanka, to mention a few–are in a precarious situation. The developed countries–such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany–have ballooning current account deficits and are witnessing higher poverty levels.
Global inequality in income and wealth redistribution is accelerating social division. Unscrupulous politicians–who masquerade as leaders–exploit the situation to manufacture discontent and leverage it for electoral gains that enable them to cease power.
