Irrfan Khan & Rishi Kapoor created their own space in the competitive world of Cinema & left an indelible mark.

The demise of two of Bollywood’s eminent personalities in the last two days has been a shock for cinema buffs. Rishi Kapoor, 67, and Irrfan Khan, 53, were young and active and their loss is felt very deeply.

I did not have a personal engagement with either of them, but then stars have that imminent quality of being a part of our lives. Rishi Kapoor was a contemporary of mine. The chocolate hero and lover boy was an icon for me in my teens. I always wished I had his smile, his fun-loving lifestyle and his winning ways with pretty girls.

For me, Rishi Kapoor was the epitome of a lover who, though faced with anxiety, almost always succeeded in securing his love. On-screen, he managed to do all this with some fun and laughter thrown in.

Beginning with his role in Mera Naam Joker – as the young boy infatuated with his teacher – he carved out a niche as the lover boy of the mid-1970s. Bobby launched his adult career. It was a romantic love story that became an unprecedented hit.
