Indian cinema has turned into a propaganda machine. There has been a steady increase of propaganda films since 2014.

In March 2022, a film called ‘Kashmir Files,’ was released. It was made by Vivek Agnihotri, a filmmaker who blatantly supports the BJP. The film, about the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits during the exodus of 1990, stands out as a classic example of disinformation.

The number of Kashmiri Pandits who were massacred, for instance, which the film says was in the thousands, was below 500. The film shows Kashmiri Muslims spewing hateful slogans. But there is little evidence about hateful slogans by the Kashmiri Muslims. On the other hand, thousands of Muslims were killed. Muslim women were raped, too. But none of this finds a place in the movie.

Furthermore, the film shows all Muslims in a bad light. None of them is shown to have good intentions. One is a pervert, one is a snitch who tells the location of a Kashmiri Pandit family to a militant group. Even Muslim children bully Hindu ones.

The reality, however, is very different. Many kind Muslims helped the Kashmiri Pandits. They helped the Kashmiri Pandits; offered food and shelter, protected them from the extremists.
