Louise Glück, an American poet and Professor at Yale University, won the Nobel Prize in literature, 2020. The Swedish Academy, which oversees the award, recognised her for “her unmistakable poetic voice, that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.”

She is the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since the Nobel prizes were first awarded in 1901.

Born 1943 in New York City and raised in New York’s Long Island, Glück suffered from Anorexia nervosa while in high school. While in therapy, she elected to enrol in poetry workshops over a traditional college education and began to write poetry.

Drawing from her illness, she wrote about the painful reality of being human, dealing with themes such as death, childhood, and family life. Her poetry is also inspired by Greek mythological characters, such as Persephone and Eurydice, who are the victims of betrayal.
