Open the windows, pull curtains aside
Keep the door (and your mind) ajar
The new year is lurking somewhere near
Let it slowly glide inside
Ask it to sit and talk awhile
with the one getting ready to leave
Let it get acquainted with
all that could and could not be
May it know what colour is joy
What all makes a heart to break
What is real and what untrue
Which things matter, which do not
Let it get some training too
How and when to tread softly
Which days must it fast forward
Which ones to stash to memory
Perhaps the year will at least learn
How to be and not to be
You see, the ones that came before
Sadly lacked such common sense!
