Dilip Menon’s poignant poem about the desperation in Afghanistan.

He ran, stumbling,
the loose shalwar
flapping at his ankles
through elbows and the smell
of cumin and haste.
The metal beast stood, its maw open
the school of bodies rushed in
tripping, falling, entangled.
He heard the low drone,
saw the jaws shut,
and leapt. His arms wrenched
from their sockets
as the giant bird rose.
