On October 3, a man arrived in Nairobi after travelling from the Democratic Republic of the Congo through Uganda. He had been ill for about a month and had sought care at several hospitals in the Congo. By the time he reached Kenya, his journey had become a race against a disease that few people outside the region knew by name.
He was isolated in a Nairobi hospital. Two national laboratories confirmed that he carried the Bundibugyo virus. On October 5, despite supportive care, he died. The following day, health workers gave him a safe and dignified burial. Within days, Kenya had identified additional infections among his contacts. The virus had crossed another international border, carried by a traveller whose illness had preceded his arrival. The World Health Organization reported the case on October 8.
