For the Uighur community in India, the question of what it means to belong, to have a homeland, remains as relevant as ever.

The cold wind swept across the towering peaks, and the snow-covered land stretched out like a barren white ocean. The Uighur Muslims—exiles from their homeland—staggered through the deep snow, their feet raw from the cold, their bodies wracked with exhaustion, and their spirits hanging by a thread.

They had been walking for days, perhaps weeks, across one of the highest and most unforgiving terrains on Earth, the unforgiving Himalayas. Their destination: Ladakh, a remote region in India where they hoped to find sanctuary. It was 1949, a time when hope was dwindling, but survival, for many, was the only thing that mattered.
