The Assault On Academic Freedom Is A Sign Of Democratic Decline

The erosion of academic freedom in India is a symptom of a deeper crisis of democratic values and institutional autonomy.

Academic freedom — the autonomy of teachers and students to teach, study, pursue knowledge, research and fearlessly spread ideas without governmental or societal regulations and interference — is under assault. In India, this form of freedom has been facing increasing restrictions in recent years.

Censorship and surveillance have intensified, revealing an alarming decline in the exercise of democratic liberty of thought and expression. In this essay, I examine the socio-political factors that have led to this decline in academic freedom and present examples that demonstrate the worsening plight of the Indian academic community.
