Twenty years after 9/11, the student of International Relations (IR), engaged in historical reasoning, is compelled to raise a few questions.
- Why did 9/11 occur at all? Obviously, one has to study the pre 9/11 events that contributed to the disaster.
- How did the international community, led by the United States, respond to 9/11? Was the response just and wise?
- What are the lessons to be learnt–assuming humans are capable of learning lessons?
A cynic might say that the only lesson history teaches us is that humans do not learn any.
Why did 9/11 occur?
It is well known that Osama bin-Laden orchestrated the 9/11 attacks on America. But why did he want to attack America?
Let’s look at the answer given by President George Bush Jr. in his address to the Congress on September 20, 2001, a speech applauded 29 times.
They hate what they see right here in this chamber: a democratically elected government. Their leaders are self-appointed. They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote and assemble and disagree with each other.
