It is fair to say that the present government does not like Mahatma Gandhi. Before becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi was a Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS). Nathuram Godse, the man who murdered Mahatma Gandhi, was also a member of the same organisation.
As the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Amit Shah, the present Home Minister of India, gave Pragya Thakur, a terror-accused who considers Nathuram Godse a patriot, a ticket to stand for Parliament. Pragya Thakur, a devotee of Godse, is now a Right Honorable Member of Parliament from Bhopal.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Father of the Nation has lost some currency under the current regime. This is because the RSS, which most of the ruling BJP is drawn from, did not agree with the principles of non-violence and equality of religions.
Mahatma Gandhi agitated against the unfair policies imposed upon Indians by the British Empire. This was in sharp contrast to the RSS, whose leadership mostly sat out the Indian freedom movement.
