Thank you for subscribing to the Madras Courier.
Established on October 12, 1785, by Richard Johnston, the Madras Courier was the first newspaper of the Madras Presidency, British India. Selling for a princely sum of one rupee, it thrived for three decades as one of the leading newspapers of its time.
Two centuries later, on October 12, 2016, we restarted this legacy in its digital avatar – www.madrascourier.com – to serve a global audience of curious, intelligent readers, interested in South Asian affairs.
We curate stories that enhance our understanding of the world in meaningful ways. In telling them, we chart the course of history, connect the past to the present, and blend everyday life with anthropological insight. What you will receive is a daily serving of scholarship, ideas, and experiences that shape our times.
It’s an exciting journey from here on, and we’re glad to have you onboard.
