The World Health Organization has classed gaming addiction as a disorder. Here’s what you need to know.

Gaming is addictive. Games have the same impact on the brain as alcohol, tobacco and cocaine. Young people, particularly children, are increasingly spending their time playing video/web games. Many are getting addicted to them.

The makers of video games are making them addictive by creating layers and layers of ‘hooks’ to keep the young minds hooked to the games. Moreover, they mine and sell data from the game.

Easy access to mobile phones and wireless data, algorithms aimed at getting kids addicted to gaming, parental negligence and peer pressure, among others, are contributing to gaming addiction among children. Such is their impact that children neglect everything else ––social relationships, education, hygiene, fitness/sports––and spend most of their time playing games.

Excessive gaming, also called Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), can severely affect a child’s physical and mental health. Recently, the World Health Organization has classed gaming addiction as a disorder.
